“Measure your life in love” (my New Years wish for you)

Hello beautiful,

I’ve been sitting here these past few weeks, going back and forth on what I want to share with you as we wind down on another year.

There’s so much I want to say and share; it’s been a big year, and so in all honesty I have been tripping myself up with the thought of coming up with the most perfect end-of-year email.

Yet, after watching an episode of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel a few nights ago(which btw if you haven’t watched that show, it’s a must), the inspiration and clarity finally came.

So here it goes…

One of my favorite musicals growing up was Rent (still is). I mean I am talking almost knowing every word to every song love affair with Rent.

Honest to goodness, it got me through some tough high school years. Even though at 15 I didn’t get all the innuendos and entire meaning of the play, it spoke so directly to me. I feel how it spoke to me the most is in a world where I often felt like I didn’t belong, and often felt different and like I didn’t fit into “normative” society, it is a play that celebrates differences…

It is a play that documents real life, and the beautiful and sometimes messy realness of being human…

It shares so transparently the insecurities we all experience at some point in our lives…

It shares the message that uniqueness and quirkiness is something to not be ashamed of, but rather celebrated!…

It talks about the real life truths we often don’t publicly talk about or that there’s a lot of taboo around like sex, Aids, addiction, homosexuality and celebrating love beyond labels (amen!), and so much more…

And it talks about life and death, and the message to live life to the fullest-No day but today.

In a world where so often we’re taught to be anything other than who we are it was and has been refreshing and freeing for me to experience something so revolutionary for it’s time.

At that time of my life it gave me hope…  It helped me feel a bit more courageous to just be me… It inspired me to be ME, and share that with the world-quirkiness and all.

There’s a song in the musical, Seasons of Love… which speak about the 525,600 minutes we have in each year.

I’ve probably played and heard that song thousands of times and yet each time it moves me.

It moves me because it reminds me to really live life fully, to really cherish each minute.

That there’s more to life than just being an “appropriate-a good girl”, checking all the boxes, and being in a constant state of doing.

It reminds me to laugh more. To dance like no one’s watching. To just BE. That we’re meant to connect and be seen, heard, and loved beyond our phones and the interwebs.

One of my favorite clauses in the song is,

“Five hundred twenty-five thousand six hundred minutes

How do you measure the life

Of a woman or a man?

In truths that she learned

Or in times that he cried

In bridges he burned

Or the way that she died

It’s time now to sing out

Tho’ the story never ends

Let’s celebrate

Remember a year in the life of friends

Remember the love”

And so as we come to the end of another year, and transition into a new one, let’s receive some inspiration from Rent…

How about as you reflect on this past year-remember your year in a life of Love.

The highs and the lows. The moments of pure joy, and the moments that brought you to your knees.

The learnings of the challenging moments, and the new awarenesses you discovered about yourself.

Celebrating, and loving the amazing brilliant soul that you are.

To complete this year, and step into 2019 remember just how fucking enough and divinely incredible you truly are.

Perhaps you can do this through some journaling and reflection time, or really just taking a moment to reflect internally works great too.

And so as we complete another year, to all of you here, even if we’ve never met in person, or even talked, I am grateful you’re here, and part of the Yoga’licious community. It means the world to me that I get to share a little piece of life with you; as you’re not just another number on my list, I really value you being here.

I am wishing you a beautiful holiday (whatever you celebrate), and New Years.

I’ll be back in the new year with more inspiration and offerings for you, and really looking forward to deepening our connection.

with love,

P.S. If you’re feeling inspired now to sing along with Seasons of Love, here you go {you’re welcome :)}
